Do You Have What it Takes to Change? Check the 10 Essential Traits
5The Moment of Clarity series has confirmed something for me: none of us can predict or force our moment of clarity. In most cases, it is an act of grace. It may not appear in the garb of an angel, but it is, at least in the stories we’ve read so far, entirely out of our control: Emma saw herself in a photograph; Kristin watched her home burn down; Gines lost a business and fell into depression; Robin received a message from a professor…all experienced a moment that “just happened.”
Yet there are elements of change that we can control. These include personal characteristics that support the ability and willingness to change. Without these traits, those who have shared their stories might not have recognized their moment of grace or been able to act on it.
Do you have the traits of change?
- Self-awareness
- Desire to feel better
- Belief that it is possible to feel better
- Rigorous self-honesty
- Humility
- Open-mindedness
- Detachment from others
- Willingness
- Persistence
- Personal responsibility
Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore each of these characteristics in depth. As we approach another year and consider new beginnings, tune in for more about what it truly takes to change your world, your viewpoint, and yourself.

Moment of Clarity – Gail Brenner | Insanely Serene
December 02, 2010[...] Gail has incorporated many methods into her work, but the core of her success is her internal commitment to being present and joyful in the possibilities of every next breath. I find this kind of faith in life amazing, as when she left a seemingly ideal situation in one place to up and move somewhere else because she felt an inner urging for adventure. The willingness to explore new avenues and open oneself to the unknown represent some of the key characteristics of change (for more on this, check out The 10 Essential Traits of Personal Change).
